2012 Baseball Draft: Update on 13th Round Picks

We continue afternoon with the well-liked series of draft reviews, today with an update on players drafted in the 13th round. By popular demand, I'll keep this going into the teen rounds to pick up the overslot draftees. I will continue this series until my sanity breaks.

399) Brian Holmes, LHP, Houston Astros: Slot bonus college pitcher from Wake Forest, solid debut for Tri-City in the New York-Penn League, 2.57 ERA with 65/25 K/BB in 67 innings, only 39 hits allowed. Age 21, has sleeper potential.

400) Erich Knab, RHP, Minnesota Twins: High school pitcher from South Carolina, didn't sign, going to Spartanburg Junior College. Considered very raw.

401) Blake Hauser, RHP, Seattle Mariners: Slot bonus college pitcher from Virginia Commonwealth, 3.75 ERA with 26/13 K/BB in 24 innings for Everett in the Northwest League, 19 hits. Live arm, didn't live up to expectations in college, age 21.

402) Wade Wass, C, Baltimore Orioles: Junior college catcher, did not sign.

403) Hunter Haynes, LHP, Kansas City Royals: Local kid, high school pitcher from Mexico, Missouri, signed for slot money. The Royals like sucking up local talent to avoid any more Albert Pujols draft debacles. Haynes posted a 7.82 ERA with a 34/24 K/BB in 36 innings in the AZL, allowing 50 hits. Age 18.

404) Bijan Rademacher, OF, Chicago Cubs: Slot bonus for junior college outfielder, good arm, athletic, hit .278/.320/.396 with 12 walks, 35 strikeouts in 187 at-bats between AZL Cubs, Boise in the NWL, and Low-A Peoria. Age 21, good tools, has a chance to improve.

405) Malcom Diaz, RHP, San Diego Padres: Slot bonus high school pitcher from Puerto Rico. Age 18, severe control problems in pro debut, 9.68 ERA with 16/27 K/BB in 18 innings, 28 hits, but also posted a 2.60 GO/AO. Athletic, low-90s sinker, but very raw.

406) Tom Harlan, LHP, Pittsburgh Pirates: Below slot bonus for college lefty, smooth delivery and a good curve but lacks velocity, solid year for Fresno State. 5.19 ERA with 33/11 K/BB in 35 innings for State College in the NY-P, 1.80 GO/AO, gave up 44 hits.

407) Blake Logan, RHP, Miami Marlins: Junior college pitcher from Oklahoma, overslot bonus ($125,000), stocky body (6-1, 245), low 90s heat, effective so far, 1.74 ERA with 29/7 K/BB in 31 innings for Jamestown in the NY-P, 31 hits. Age 20.

408) Kyle Von Tungeln, OF, Colorado Rockies: Slot bonus college outfielder, hit .258/.401/.384 with 34 walks, 36 strikeouts in 151 at-bats for Tri-City in the Northwest League. Toolsy, will draw some walks, has some sleeper potential. Age 21. Would make a good Prussian General Staff with Zack Von Rosenberg and Duke Von Shamaan.

409) Stuart Pudenz, RHP, Oakland Athletics: Slot bonus college pitcher with good fastball and splitter, 2.59 ERA with 37/9 K/BB in 31 innings for Vermont in the NY-P, 21 hits. Age 21. Looks like a bullpen sleeper to me.

410) Matt Bowman, RHP, New York Mets: Slot bonus college pitcher from Princeton, excellent control for Brooklyn in the NY-P, 2.45 ERA with 30/2 K/BB in 29 innings, 26 hits, 1.89 GO/AO. Another reliever to track. Age 21.

411) Derek Thompson, LHP, Chicago White Sox: Illinois junior college pitcher didn't sign.

412) Matt Boyd, LHP, Cincinnati Reds: College pitcher from Oregon State didn't sign. Returning to college.

413) Tyler Booth, OF, Cleveland Indians: Slot bonus junior college outfielder, hit .268/.287/.420 with five walks, 40 strikeouts in 157 at-bats in the AZL. Age 19, but has a lot of work to do with the strike zone.

414) Elliott Waterman, LHP, Washington Nationals: Slot bonus college pitcher from San Francisco, 4.97 ERA with 24/22 K/BB in 25 innings for Auburn in the NY-P, 31 hits. Held back by control issues at this point. Age 21.

415) John Silviano, C, Toronto Blue Jays: Slot bonus for Florida high school catcher, hit .164/.298/.284 with 22 walks, 21 strikeouts in 116 at-bats in the GCL, threw out 21%. Didn't turn 18 until July, making him one of the youngest players in the class, essentially giving him an extra year on the development curve.

416) Darnell Sweeney, SS, Los Angeles Dodgers: Slot bonus college infielder, features athleticism, range, arm strength, hit .291/.372/.447 with 24 walks, 41 strikeouts, 17-for-21 in steals in 199 at-bats for Great Lakes in the Low-A Midwest League. Age 21. Impressive debut, this guy has some potential, wasn't supposed to be much of a hitter but he adapted fast.

417) Mike Morin, RHP, Los Angeles Angels: Slot bonus college closer from North Carolina, 4.93 ERA with 29/14 K/BB in 35 innings for Orem in the Pioneer League, 34 hits, four saves. Age 21, reportedly needs better breaking stuff.

418) Ryan Jones, 2B, San Francisco Giants: Slot bonus infielder from Michigan State, steady glove but didn't hit in Northwest League, .227/.307/.283 with 22 walks, 35 strikeouts in 198 at-bats for Salem-Keizer. Age 21.

419) Nathan Hyatt, RHP, Atlanta Braves: Slot bonus college pitcher from Appalachian State, throws hard but undersized, excellent performance so far: 1.46 ERA with 37/8 K/BB in 25 innings between Danville in the Appy and Rome in the Low-A Sally League, just 13 hits. Age 21, another relief candidate.

420) Brett Wiley, SS, St. Louis Cardinals: Junior college infielder with good track record, hit .300/.389/.443 with 19 walks, 27 strikeouts in 140 at-bats for GCL Cardinals. Performed well but old for the level at age 21. Decent tools across the board.

421) J.B. Wendelken, RHP, Boston Red Sox: Slot bonus junior college reliever, low 90s fastball, extremely effective in the GCL, 1.27 ERA with 28/3 K/BB in 21 innings, just 11 hits. Age 19, need higher level data but a good start to his career.

422) Dylan Floro, RHP, Tampa Bay Rays: Slot bonus college pitcher from CS Fullerton, fringy stuff but deceptive. 2.40 ERA with 21/4 K/BB in 30 innings, 26 hits. Check out the 5.45 GO/AO ratio. Combine that with superior control and you have a sleeper. Age 21.

423) Phildrick Llewellyn, C, Arizona Diamonbacks. Overslot ($125,000) high school catcher from Florida. Hit .240/.336/.314 with 18 walks, 41 strikeouts in 121 at-bats, threw out 19% of runners and also played a lot of first base. Age 18. Didn't do much in rookie ball, but his full name is "Phildrick Deion Miguelito Llewelllyn" which is worth 500 points of OPS by itself.

424) Devon Travis, 2B, Detroit Tigers: Double-slot bonus ($200,000) for Florida State infielder. Hit .280/.352/.441 with eight walks, 10 strikeouts in 93 at-bats for Connecticut in the New York-Penn League, solid defense as well. Age 21.

425) Alan Sharkey, 1B, Milwaukee Brewers: Florida high school first baseman, hit .240/.322/.279 with 18 walks, 17 strikeouts in 154 at-bats for the AZL Brewers, also made nine errors in 41 games at first base. Not much to be wild about yet but just 18.

426) Sam Stafford, LHP, Texas Rangers: Local Texas Longhorn product, missed year recovering from shoulder injury.

427) James Pazos, LHP, New York Yankees: Slot bonus college pitcher with average stuff, good statistical track record. 1.79 ERA with 39/19 K/BB in 40 innings, 29 hits allowed for Staten Island in the NY-P, 3.26 GO/AO. Nice K/grounder combination, age 21, relief potential if he slows down the walk rate.

428) Steven Golden, OF, Philadelphia Phillies: Slot bonus high school outfielder from California. .177/.215/.226 with three walks, 19 strkeouts in 62 at-bats in the GCL. Awful numbers but he's just 17, has tools, etc.
