FCC confident in its mobile phone radiation limits, seeks second opinions

FCC confident in its mobile phone radiation limits, seeks second opinions

Cast your memory back to last summer. Sweep away memories of iPhone 5 leaks galore, and you might remember that the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) asked the FCC to reevaluate its radiation limits for mobile phones. Now a few seasons later, the FCC has finally wrapped up a report that responds to the GAO, and there are no changes to its RF radiation levels in sight because it feels comfortable with its current caps. "We continue to have confidence in the current exposure limits, and note that more recent international standards have a similar basis," reads the report. However, given that its guidelines were adopted in 1996, new research on radiation and the proliferation of mobile devices, the FCC would like some feedback regarding its restrictions. It's put out a call for comments from concerned parties and even federal health and safety bodies.

Though the freshly-released document didn't rock the proverbial boat, it made one change worth noting. The pinna (outer ear) is now classified an extremity, which means the FCC allows devices to hit the tissue with more radiation. Feel like poring through 201 pages of regulatory minutiae? Belgium agrees savings, asset sales to meet EU budget demands

By Philip Blenkinsop

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgium agreed to make 1.4 billion euros ($1.8 billion) of savings and to sell 1 billion euros of state-owned assets on Saturday, as it strives to meet EU budget targets and avoid being drawn into the euro zone's debt crisis.

With debt approaching 100 percent of national output (GDP), Belgium has some of the weakest public finances in the euro zone's northern "core", partially due to an almost two-year political stalemate that was only resolved in late 2011.

Its six-party government has taken steps since but, like other euro zone members, looks set to miss the targets set by the European Union due to poor economic growth.

The 1.434 billion euros, an addition to 2013 savings already announced last year, will reduce the country's structural deficit - a measure of the underlying shortfall on public finances allowing for the ebb and flow of the economic cycle - by 1 percentage point, it said.

"The government repeats its wish to bring its budget into structural balance by 2015. This is a new, important step to reach that goal," Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo told a news conference, hours after an early morning breakthrough.

Olli Rehn, EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, gave clearance in the past week for Belgium's deficit this year to be greater than the planned 2.15 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), according to government sources.

But Belgium still needs to reduce its structural deficit, excluding one-offs and smoothing for cyclical factors, to 1.8 percent, keep its overall debt level below 100 percent of GDP and achieve a structural budget balance by 2015.

The additional savings, a huge series of measures ranging from a reduction in support for the national railway operator to an increase in duty on tobacco, would result in an overall budget deficit of 2.46 percent of GDP.

"We have the protected the purchasing power of the citizens and our economic fabric as much as possible," Di Rupo said.

"With these budgetary measures, we will enhance the stabilization of public finances and will reinforce fundamental items necessary to exit the crisis," Di Rupo said.

Finance Minister Koen Geens declined to say what the state might sell, adding that to do so could simply depress prices.

Belgium would need to find a further 1 billion euros from asset sales to ensure national debt did not rise beyond 100 percent of GDP, he said.

Belgium holds a 10 percent stake in French bank BNP Paribas , 53.5 percent of telecom operator Belgacom and a stake in Royal Park Investments, the bad bank created during the 2008 break-up of lender Fortis.

Its headline deficit last year was around the euro zone's recommended ceiling of 3.0 percent of GDP, from 3.7 percent in 2011. However, adding a 2.915 billion euro contribution to the bailout of Franco-Belgian lender Dexia would push the 2012 gap to 3.8 percent.

Belgium did little in the way of budgetary consolidation in 2010 and 2011, due to the absence of a fully fledged government after an inconclusive election. But despite a spike in its borrowing costs at the end of 2011, economists say it now belongs firmly to the safer "core" of the euro zone.

That view was backed up on Monday when the AA-rated sovereign sold 10-year debt at the lowest ever auction yield.

HBT NL East preview: Can Braves pace Nats?

For the past few days?we?ve been previewing the 2013 season. Here, in handy one-stop-shopping form, is our package of previews from the National League East.

The Washington Nationals; 2012 season ended with a fall-from-ahead playoff loss, but let?s not forget that they won more games than anyone last year and seem loaded for bear once again. Are they the best team in baseball right now?

The Braves got the Upton brothers but they lost Chipper Jones and Martin Prado. Does that translate to the playoffs once again?

The squad the Phillies assembled a couple of years ago seemed like it?d be poised to compete for a good long while. But last year injury and age caught up with them. Was that a bump in the road or the beginning of the end of the Halladay-Lee-Hamels-Howard-Utley-Rollins core?

The Mets are coming out of years of financial misery. How long until their on-the-field fortunes turn as well?

The Marlins introduced a whole new look in 2012 then, in gutting payroll and trading away half the roster, they reverted to old form rather abruptly. What, if anything, is worth watching in Miami?

Below are our team-by-team previews for the NL East as well as our HBT Extra feature on the division. Enjoy.

'Harry Potter' actor Richard Griffiths dies at 65

LONDON (AP) ? Richard Griffiths was one of the great British stage actors of his generation, a heavy man with a light touch, whether in Shakespeare or Neil Simon. But for millions of movie fans, he will always be grumpy Uncle Vernon, the least magical of characters in the fantastical "Harry Potter" movies.

Griffiths died Thursday at University Hospital in Coventry, central England, from complications following heart surgery, his agent, Simon Beresford, said. He was 65.

"Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe paid tribute to the actor Friday, saying that "any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence."

"I am proud to say I knew him," Radcliffe said.

Griffiths won a Tony Award for "The History Boys" and appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows. But he will be most widely remembered as a pair of contrasting uncles ? Harry Potter's Uncle Vernon Dursley and Uncle Monty in cult film "Withnail and I."

Griffiths was among a huge roster of British acting talent to appear in the "Harry Potter" series of films released between 2001 and 2011.

His role, as the grudging, magic-fearing guardian of orphaned wizard Harry, was small but pivotal. Griffiths once said he liked playing Uncle Vernon "because that gives me a license to be horrible to kids."

But Radcliffe recalled Griffiths' kindness to the young star.

"Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career," said Radcliffe, who in 2007 starred with Griffiths in a London and Broadway production of "Equus."

"In August 2000, before official production had even begun on 'Potter,' we filmed a shot outside the Dursleys', which was my first ever shot as Harry. I was nervous, and he made me feel at ease.

"Seven years later, we embarked on 'Equus' together. It was my first time doing a play, but, terrified as I was, his encouragement, tutelage and humor made it a joy."

Earlier, Griffiths was the louche, lecherous Uncle Monty to Richard E. Grant's character Withnail in "Withnail and I," a low-budget British comedy about two out-of-work actors that has become a cult classic. Years after its 1987 release, Griffiths said people would regularly shout Monty's most famous lines at him in the street.

"My beloved 'Uncle Monty' Richard Griffiths died last night," Grant tweeted Friday. "Chin-Chin my dear friend."

A huge stage presence with a grace rendered all the more striking by his physical bulk, Griffiths created roles including the charismatic teacher Hector at the emotional heart of Alan Bennett's school drama "The History Boys." He won an Olivier Award for the part in London and a Tony for the Broadway run, and repeated his performance in the 2006 film adaptation.

National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner, who directed "The History Boys," called Griffiths' performance in that play "a masterpiece of wit, delicacy, mischief and desolation, often simultaneously."

Griffiths also played poet W.H. Auden in Bennett's "The Habit of Art," a hugely persuasive performance despite the lack of physical resemblance between the two men.

Griffiths was born in northeast England's Thormaby-on-Tees in 1947 to parents who were deaf and mute ? an experience he and his directors felt contributed to his exceptional ability to listen and to communicate physically.

"The first language he learned was sign. And therefore his ability to listen to people with his eyes as well as his ears is incredible," Thea Sharrock, who directed "Equus," told The Associated Press in 2008.

Griffiths left school at 15 but later studied drama and spent a decade with the Royal Shakespeare Company, making a specialty of comic parts such as the buffoonish knight Falstaff.

On television, he played a crime-solving chef in 1990s' British TV series "Pie in the Sky," and he had parts in movies ranging from historical dramas "Chariots of Fire" and "Gandhi" to slapstick farce "The Naked Gun 2 ?."

Known for his sense of humor, large store of rambling theatrical anecdotes and occasional bursts of temper, Griffiths was renowned for shaming audience members whose cell phones rang during plays by stopping the performance and ordering the offender to leave.

Griffiths' last major stage role was in a West End production of Neil Simon's comedy "The Sunshine Boys" last year opposite Danny DeVito. The pair had been due to reprise their roles in Los Angeles later this year.

Theater director Trevor Nunn, who as head of the Royal Shakespeare Company was one of the first to spot Griffiths' talent, said he was "an actor of rare emotional and indeed tragic power."

"Richard inspired great love and spread much happiness, and as the Shakespeare he loved put it, 'There's a great spirit gone,'" Nunn said.

Griffiths is survived by his wife, Heather Gibson.

Pre-Relationships in Clinical Group ? Mindset and the Role of Bio ...

The college of psychotherapist/sexology believes that a complete and fulfilled sex life is really a prerequisite for human being health, especially emotionally and psychologically. This school of thought presumes that sexual arousal and orgasm are both bio-electrical processes that are directly related to the function and health of the rest of our body?s organs and bio-electrical procedures.

This train of thought additionally believe that the male and female genitalia are the precise complements of each other, designed for the purpose of allowing male and female, whenever properly joined, to make and complete a larger bio-electrical signal. Only using the potential of the larger, discussed circuit can we completely and properly utilize and release the erotic electricity/energy that pulses by means of us. As well as, if sexual arousal and orgasm are not properly used to continually circulate this particular sexual energy/tension within the body, compared to this ?bottling up? of energy will cause health insurance and psychological problems.

Similarly, the actual synergy and possible created by this properly completed ?sexual circuit? can do allowing each male and female to accomplish their individual erotic potential; theoretically, the very best, most enjoyable and fulfilling climaxes and climaxes can just be created through this technique.

Indeed, not every psychotherapists and sexologists may go along with this school of thought; you might be still in good firm.

Within 1905, ?Sexuality within the Aetiology of the Neuroses? Freud wrote, ?No neuroses is achievable with a regular erotic vitae. ?

Doctor Wilhelm Reich known the ?proper and complete orgasm? because ?Orgastic Strength. ? Within 1927, ?Function of the Climax, ? Doctor Reich defined it as ??the capacity for the surrender of the flow of biological energy without any inhibition, the capacity with regard to complete discharge of dammed-up sexual excitation through involuntary pleasurable contractions of the entire body. Not a one neurotic person possessses orgastic efficiency; the evidence of this fact is the truth that the majority of individuals suffer from a character neurosis. ?

Alfred Kinsey said ?intercourse between couple is one of the the majority of completely mutual activities in which two people are engage, and achieve simultaneous orgasm is the best achievement which is possible in a sexual romantic relationship. ?

One of the physical indications of the proper circulation and discharge of the orgastic energy is the warm ?melting? sensation that both males and females call being a part of their deepest and many fulfilling. It?s often stated that ?The Perfect Sexual intercourse Position? is the most reliable and effective ways for both males and females to achieve this kind of ?melting? climax.

?The Perfect Sex Position? was introduced to the study of sexology and advanced with a psychotherapist named Edward Eichel. Within 1977, Eichel provided a paper to the Congress of Medical Sexology in Rome and named this position the particular ?Coital Alignment Technique (CAT)? and declared the benefits integrated ?a synergic effect that rejuvenates the whole mind. ? In early works by Experts and Johnson, an identical sexual position had been referred to as the particular ?Coital Overdrive? placement.

How herpesvirus invades nervous system

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Northwestern Medicine scientists have identified a component of the herpesvirus that "hijacks" machinery inside human cells, allowing the virus to rapidly and successfully invade the nervous system upon initial exposure.

Led by Gregory Smith, associate professor in immunology and microbiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, researchers found that viral protein 1-2, or VP1/2, allows the herpesvirus to interact with cellular motors, known as dynein. Once the protein has overtaken this motor, the virus can speed along intercellular highways, or microtubules, to move unobstructed from the tips of nerves in skin to the nuclei of neurons within the nervous system.

This is the first time researchers have shown a viral protein directly engaging and subverting the cellular motor; most other viruses passively hitch a ride into the nervous system.

"This protein not only grabs the wheel, it steps on the gas," says Smith. "Overtaking the cellular motor to invade the nervous system is a complicated accomplishment that most viruses are incapable of achieving. Yet the herpesvirus uses one protein, no others required, to transport its genetic information over long distances without stopping."

Herpesvirus is widespread in humans and affects more than 90 percent of adults in the United States. It is associated with several types of recurring diseases, including cold sores, genital herpes, chicken pox, and shingles. The virus can live dormant in humans for a lifetime, and most infected people do not know they are disease carriers. The virus can occasionally turn deadly, resulting in encephalitis in some.

Until now, scientists knew that herpesviruses travel quickly to reach neurons located deep inside the body, but the mechanism by which they advance remained a mystery.

Smith's team conducted a variety of experiments with VP1/2 to demonstrate its important role in transporting the virus, including artificial activation and genetic mutation of the protein. The team studied the herpesvirus in animals, and also in human and animal cells in culture under high-resolution microscopy. In one experiment, scientists mutated the virus with a slower form of the protein dyed red, and raced it against a healthy virus dyed green. They observed that the healthy virus outran the mutated version down nerves to the neuron body to insert DNA and establish infection.

"Remarkably, this viral protein can be artificially activated, and in these conditions it zips around within cells in the absence of any virus. It is striking to watch," Smith says.

He says that understanding how the viruses move within people, especially from the skin to the nervous system, can help better prevent the virus from spreading.

Additionally, Smith says, "By learning how the virus infects our nervous system, we can mimic this process to treat unrelated neurologic diseases. Even now, laboratories are working on how to use herpesviruses to deliver genes into the nervous system and kill cancer cells."

Smith's team will next work to better understand how the protein functions. He notes that many researchers use viruses to learn how neurons are connected to the brain.

"Some of our mutants will advance brain mapping studies by resolving these connections more clearly than was previously possible," he says.

Pistorius allowed to leave SAfrica with conditions

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? International athletics body the IAAF says Oscar Pistorius would be allowed to run at this year's world championships if he qualifies after the double-amputee runner was cleared by a court to leave South Africa to compete in track meets.

The Olympic athlete had appealed against some of his bail conditions, and a judge ruled Thursday that Pistorius can travel outside of South Africa to run, but with certain conditions. Pistorius is charged with murder in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

IAAF spokesman Yannis Nikolau says in a statement that there would be no objection from the world body to Pistorius competing at the worlds, saying "on the basis of the 'innocent until proven guilty' principle he would be free to run."

Nikolau says the decision on whether Pistorius could run at other events would be at the "discretion of meeting organizers" and not the IAAF.

Britain's domestic spy agency names new director

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's domestic spy agency has chosen a new director, a 50-year-old ornithologist with counter-terrorism experience in the Middle East and Northern Ireland.

Andrew Parker, one of the youngest MI5 directors in recent history, has worked for the service for 30 years and led the agency's response to the July 7 London transit bombings in 2005 that killed 52 people.

Parker said Thursday he's "extremely proud of the extraordinary work the men and women of MI5 do to keep the country safe in challenging circumstances," and is looking forward to his "next chapter."

Besides his work in the fields of Middle East terrorism, counter- espionage and Northern Ireland terrorism, Parker also has experience in serious and organized crime prevention, protective security and strategic planning. He also had a liaison posting in the United States in 1991.

Parker was appointed MI5's director of international terrorism prevention in 2005, the same year that suicide bombers attacked during London's rush-hour.

In 2006, his teams played a key role disrupting al-Qaida's attempt to attack multiple airliners with bombs hidden in drink bottles.

Parker, who starts his job April 22, has been the deputy director general of the agency since 2007. In that role, he has been responsible for leading all the service's investigative and operational work.

Parker holds a degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and is married with two children.

He succeeds Jonathan Evans, who is leaving MI5 after 33 years of service.

MakerBot and Ouya Team Up to Let You Design Your Own Game Console

If you haven't heard of the Ouya yet, it's an entirely new game console not made by Sony or Microsoft which got started with one of the most successful fundraising campaigns in Kickstarter's history and is going to ship out to people who donated starting today. It uses the same Android OS that most smartphones and tablets do, so it plays many of the same games. But it also plays Ouya-exclusive games, and it hooks up to your HDTV and uses a wireless controller instead of having a touchscreen.

Ouya's creators tout its "openness," and have encouraged gamers to take it apart and use it in personal projects. Now they have partnered with MakerBot, the company behind the popular desktop 3D printer, to allow MakerBot owners to create their own custom Ouya hardware enclosures. Ouya owners can then easily pull out the circuit board from their Ouya and put it in the new chassis, allowing them to make their console look however they want.

What does the Ouya look like normally?

It's a black-and-chrome box roughly the size of a Rubik's cube. It doesn't have an optical drive, not even a tiny one like the similarly-shaped Gamecube had. Instead, all of its games are digital downloads, and they're all either free-to-play or free-to-try. (Either way, you have to buy them separately from the Google Play store most Android devices get their games from.)

What do you need to make a custom Ouya enclosure?

The schematics on MakerBot's Thingiverse site, and a MakerBot 3D printer itself.

How do you get one of those?

The MakerBot Replicator 2, which the schematics were optimized for, retails for $2,199 and "currently ships with a lead time of approximately four weeks," meaning that it'd take at least that long to get one even if you had the cash.

How much would the enclosure cost to make if you had one?

A 1-kilogram spool of MakerBot PLA filament, recommended for use with this schematic, costs $48. Right now, every color except blue has a 30-day lead time.

One kilogram of filament would be enough to make numerous copies of the enclosure, since it's tiny and weighs very little.

Is there any way to customize the enclosure?

According to the schematic's page, you can use 3D modeling software (such as the free Blender) to change it around "and add features." You can also paint the finished chassis using plastic-safe paints.

Jared Spurbeck is an open-source software enthusiast, who uses an Android phone and an Ubuntu laptop PC. He has been writing about technology and electronics since 2008.

Creative Writing ? Continuum by Smriti Parikh, SYBMM, Sophia ...

They have gone. The room is empty. She is not at all sure that she understands. He has decided everything without even giving her a chance to speak. It is only the stale, cold, unmoving air that tells Ayesha that she is now alone.

In her head, the words still reverberated. ?ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! DON?T WANT ANYONE?S ADVICE OR SYMPATHY! SHE ISN?T DYING OKAY? SHE IS VERYMUCH ALIVE AND VERY MUCH CAPABLE OF DOING EVERYTHING BETTER THAN YOU AND I! I WANT EVERYONE OUT OF OUR HOUSE RIGHT NOW!? He yelled. First time in the whole of eight years that she had known him, he yelled. Even in his anger he cared for her. He hadn?t changed.

When the air failed to move for a few more minutes, she whispered, ?Sameer?? She strained her ears to listen to the shuffle of his feet, even his exasperated sigh, but there was nothing. She was alone, her and darkness, for the first time in two months.

It had been two months now since Ayesha had lost her eyesight. One fateful day had changed the way Ayesha looked at her life. In fact, it barred her from looking at anything at all. It was the 26th of March and it had been raining on their anniversary like always. Sameer was singing in his croaky voice when out of nowhere another bike cut their way and Sameer lost control of his own bike. In a moment, the world turned upside down and Ayesha slid all the way down the flyover with the bike on top of her. Sameer remained motionless on the top, unconscious. When he opened his eyes he saw everyone staring at him with moist pupils but his wife. Soon enough he was told that Ayesha had suffered a traumatic head injury which had damaged her retinal muscles completely. It struck the daylights out of Sameer to know that Ayesha, the only person who mattered to her, will never be able to see the light of day.

Ayesha had taken it in a different stride all together. She was dejected and angry at the same time but she never blamed Sameer. She knew that it wasn?t his fault. She knew he would never hurt her even in her dreams. But those first few weeks were gruesome.

After waking up every morning, she would lie in her bed for ages, trying to stretch her eyelids apart with all her might, hoping that maybe if she tore her iris apart by pushing them hard enough, she will be able to see a tiny speck of light one morning. Tired, she would get up; put her feet down on the ground to find her slippers at the same bloody place every day. Furious, she would kick them only to convince herself that she will be able to find them again. Some days she would, some days she would fail and most of the days she ended up crying. She would feel nervous when she would feel Sameer?s piercing gaze at her back, the only man who would pray that may she walk to the bathroom without stumbling into the furniture; furniture which disappeared every day, one piece at a time, just like Ayesha?s passion. She would feel ashamed when Sameer would strip her to give her a bath and excited when his fingers would run down her spine. She would be frustrated every time Sameer would sigh at her naked beauty and angry when he decided against making love to his blind wife. When Sameer would leave for work, Ayesha would sit in front of the muted TV. She would continue staring at it till Sameer came home and would only move when he lifted her up to feed her. She often wondered whether Sameer cried when he saw her scribbling random letters on a paper, when he saw her genius slip away in vain with each drop of ink. At night, Ayesha couldn?t differentiate between her dream and her reality. Because all she ever saw now, was black.

After three weeks, Ayesha had accustomed herself to everything ?new?. She got used to the stumbling and the black holes in her life while Sameer continued his occasional sobbing through the night. Until one night when Ayesha bared herself to him, took his hand and put it on her breasts. She knew Sameer wanted to love her and she knew she wanted to be loved. As the night dropped down so did her inhibition and the fear that Sameer did not love her anymore. The bodies melted together in unison as the hot summer sky ignited their passions even more. Next morning the slippers weren?t where they should be and Ayesha was happy.

Ayesha began familiarizing herself to her own house. At ten steps to the front was her dresser and at 27 to the right was her bathroom. She had started cooking too. In a week she figured out how her OCD-struck mind had organized the whole kitchen. Her hours of sitting idle in front of the TV were replaced by her obsession, writing. Her whole existence had found meaning in those five hours when she would write for her online magazine. She found happiness in doing things that she would have found tiresome otherwise. She would go to dinner every Sunday with Sameer. She started listening to things which no one else could hear. The chirp of the bird in the cacophonic city life of Bombay, the click of the lock at 6.15 sharp every evening when Sameer would come, the periodic dripping sound of water echoing through the house, and the soft ?tsk? of Sameer?s kiss on her lips. Every sound meant something to her now. For her, everything that was simple earlier had become complex except for her life. Overnight, a complex whole of her had become so simple that she no longer recognized herself.

Sameer too had realized that Ayesha was the same person if not physically different. The sway of her hips was still breathtaking and her hair left the same fragrance in every room she had stepped into. Her food had the same phenomenal taste and her eyes?well her eyes were deeper now. As vacant as they looked, they held so much of meaning. As much sorrow as they held within them, they still managed to make him laugh every time they crinkled at the edges. If possible he had fallen in love with this new Ayesha who had embraced life in her own unique way.

Together both of them wove themselves into a comfortable routine of life. Everything continued to go on as normally as it could till two days ago.

Ayesha stood in front of the mirror, gazing at something she could not even see. Her hand stuck to her belly. It was 6.10. Five more minutes and Sameer was to come home. She had never been more scared and excited at the same time. Tik. Tok. Tik. Tok. Each second punctuated her life. Click. She could hear his footsteps approaching. There was a certain bounce in them, she decided. Her heart dove deeper and deeper. Finally Sameer?s touch, he hugged her from behind and whispered, ?You?re pregnant!?

The entire world came to a standstill. She could hear his smile but she could hear the scream of her own heart as well. She was joyous, no doubt, this was what she always wanted, but things were different back then. She clutched her stomach and sat on the ground. She couldn?t breathe for one more minute. She let out a piercing wail and hugged her own knees. For her it was almost like fire licking her already charred soul. To know that you will never be able to see your own child, it had to be God?s cruel game.

Sameer, confused and befuddled, asked what happened. How would he know? How could Ayesha tell that she was jealous of her own husband? Thick tears trickled down her cheek and onto his shirt as she held onto her husband tightly. Sameer?s hand went down to her belly, an action that invited belligerence. She pushed him away, got up and walked towards the bathroom. In that moment of utter grief, her quantum Physics had gone so awry. All the paths she had familiarized herself to were stranger today. She collided into every single piece of furniture. Each collision marked her defeat, yet again.

Scared, Sameer called up, her parents first and then his, to give them the news of the baby. Similar reactions of anger followed. The next two days Ayesha stayed stuck in front of the mirror, her hand rubbing the stomach and her eyes crying. She practiced opening and closing eyes to confirm her blindness. Only tears rolled out. Sometimes she wondered why she could even cry now that she had already lost her eyes. Sameer didn?t bother Ayesha too. He maintained his distance. For the first time in eight years he was unable to decipher Ayesha. He couldn?t think of why she would be sad when all she ever wanted was a baby.

Two days later, the parents stood at the door. Ayesha was wrapped in her mother?s arms. Anxious advices flew into her ears. Ayesha remained silent, answering in her own head.

?Don?t have the baby Aishu.?

Why.

?How will you take care of it??

Just like everyone else does.

?You cannot see.?

I know, but how does it matter? I still have a heart. Didn?t you know that I was not well without even seeing my face?

?How will you manage??

Like a normal human being. I AM A NORMAL HUMAN BEING!

In the other room Sameer?s parents ranted out their woes and worries. They oscillated between the concern of their own child and Ayesha. ?What will happen to your future beta? With Ayesha?s condition you will have to be at home for the baby most of the time. And not only that, how will Ayesha run through the house when the baby cries? A mother should always be there on her toes for her child, will Ayesha be able to do that? Sameer, you have a job, you are the only earning member of your family. How will this work out? As much as we are happy about Ayesha?s pregnancy, we don?t want you to go ahead with it. Drop it son.?

That was it. It was his life. He had called them to celebrate not to deliberate. He stood up, went to Ayesha held her hand, let out a sigh and yelled, ?ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I DON?T WANT ANYONE?S ADVICE OR SYMPATHY! SHE ISN?T DYING OKAY? SHE IS VERYMUCH ALIVE AND VERY MUCH CAPABLE OF DOING EVERYTHING BETTER THAN YOU AND I! I WANT EVERYONE OUT OF OUR HOUSE RIGHT NOW!?

Ayesha came back to the present. Her heart felt contended. She had decided. One more time she whispered, ?Sameer?? This time he heard her. Ayesha heard the heavy feet dragging across the room.

Ayesha spoke, ?I am ready.?

Sameer was not really sure if he understood what she meant.

Ayesha continued, ?I am ready to have this baby. If you believe that I am capable of doing all things better than anyone else then I should be. I trust you Sameer.?

Ayesha could not see, but she knew that Sameer was crying. A tear dropped down from his cheek on Ayesha?s foot. She moved a step forward, blindly. She stretched her hands to hold onto her husband, the only person who still thought of her, as her. He held onto her almost immediately. Her hands moved up to the familiar territory of Sameer?s wet face. She wiped the tears and kissed him on his cheek. He did not know what to say. A vacuum had formed around both of them. Voids created by the past were being filled by the news of the present.

He whispered thank you in her ear and clutched onto his wife tighter, seeking solace in her when she herself was searching for comfort in him. They both complemented each other, like always. Like they did from the first time he said, ?Will you?? and before he could complete she had said ?YES!? and like they did when on their first night together they realized that they fit in each other?s craters perfectly.

They stood still on the same spot, embracing their lives. For in that moment, they both understood that they are never alone.

Gymnastics squad headed to Tuscaloosa Regional | DU Today

The No. 15 University of Denver gymnastics squad will take part in the Tuscaloosa Regional at 5 p.m. MDT April 6 at Coleman Coliseum against host No. 3 Alabama, No.9 Utah, No. 23 Kent State, No. 30 BYU and No. 35 Iowa State, the NCAA announced Monday.

?It?s always exciting to compete at the NCAA Regionals,? says head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. ?We?re looking forward to competing in a very strong region. Alabama is a great place to go and a great place to compete, and I?m confident that it?s going to be a great competition.?

DU?s rotation order for the Regional will be: bye, floor, vault, bye, bars, beam.

The Pioneers have qualified for the NCAA Regionals all 15 seasons of Kutcher-Rinehart?s tenure. Denver will look for its fourth trip to the NCAA Championships since turning Division I in 1984. A year ago, the Pioneers finished fourth at the Champaign Regional.

Denver finished second at Saturday?s Western Athletic Conference Championship, falling to Boise State by a tenth of a point. The Pioneers will head to the NCAA Regionals with a 22-3 record. DU won the WAC regular season title with a 4-0 mark. Denver will be the 15th-ranked team in the country heading into the Regional.

Alabama and Utah are two of the four programs to win a NCAA Championship in the sport?s history. The Crimson Tide have won back-to-back national titles and Utah is the only program in history to qualify for every NCAA Championship meet.

?It?s without a doubt going to be a challenging competition,? Kutcher-Rinehart says. ?There are only four teams in the country to ever win an NCAA Championship and two of the four are in our region. With that said, I have confidence that this team can compete in that type of atmosphere, and we?re looking forward to the meet.?

DU, BSU and Southern Utah made the WAC a three-bid league this year.

The top-two teams at each of the six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships April 19-21 in Los Angeles, Calif. Event winners and the top-two all-arounders from non-advancing teams will also qualify for the nation?s final meet of the season.

Three easy, small herb garden ideas | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Photo: Creative Cain Cabin/Hometalk.com

?

Building a small herb garden is a great way to get started with gardening. Vertical herb gardens don't take up much space, and they are fairly low-maintenance. If you start early enough, you can?start your herb garden from seeds. Don't worry if you get a later start on your vertical herb garden. You can still transplant starter plants, which you can buy at a nursery. I recently saw herb starter plants at my local farmer's market for about $3 per plant. That's more than the cost of seeds, but reasonable for a few plants. Remember that small containers need to be watered often. Since there is so little soil and water inside the containers, the sun can quickly dry out the plants. Be sure to water your small vertical herb garden daily. Ready to get started? Here are three ideas for vertical herb gardens that DIY-ers of any level can make.

?

Mini kitchen herb garden with bunting: The lovely Dawn from?Creative Cain Cabin?posted this project, which is an attractive kitchen herb garden in an enameled metal tub. To make an herb garden like hers, thickly plant herbs in a rectangular trough, place the trough on a small plastic container in a large metal tub. That's it! Make sure that your garden gets plenty of sun. Rotate to expose all sides of the plants to equal amounts of sun.

?

?

Shoe bag vertical garden: An over-door shoe rack or magazine holder makes a perfect "frame" for a vertical garden. Fill the pockets with potting soil, and tuck plants into the soil. This is a very space-efficient way to grow a garden, and the idea for using an over-door magazine holder comes from? Two Succulent Sisters via Crafts a la Mode.

?

Whether you are?remodeling?your deck and want to create an herb garden on it, or if you are starting a garden on your kitchen windowsill, you can use these three ideas for small herb gardens to maximize your space while growing delicious herbs.

Lakers World Peace out 6 weeks, needs knee surgery

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace will have surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee and miss the next six weeks.

The Lakers announced the timeline on Wednesday. World Peace is scheduled to have surgery Thursday and he won't be ready when the playoffs begin next month, if the Lakers reach the postseason.

They are in eighth place in the West, just a game ahead of Utah and Dallas for the final playoff spot.

World Peace was injured on Monday night against Golden State. He is averaging 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds.

D'Antoni says Jodie Meeks will start Wednesday night against Minnesota in World Peace's place. That means Kobe Bryant will be the small forward.

Obama appoints first female director of Secret Service. Why Julia Pierson?

Julia Pierson is tasked with helping to restore credibility to the Secret Service after the agency's prostitution scandal. Reaction to her appointment has been favorable.

By Allison Terry,?Correspondent / March 27, 2013

US Secret Service agent Julia Pierson has been appointed the agency?s first female director.

President Obama announced his appointment of the first female director of the US Secret Service on Tuesday, a milestone for the agency tasked with protecting political leaders and investigating currency fraud.

Law enforcement experts and political officials say that Ms. Pierson?s appointment comes at a crucial time in the agency?s history as it continues to recover from a scandal in April 2012, when agents in Colombia were disciplined for soliciting prostitutes. Pierson?s main tasks include reforming a male-dominated culture within the agency and reestablishing its credibility.

?During the Colombia prostitution scandal, the Secret Service lost the trust of many Americans, and failed to live up to the high expectations placed on it," Sen. Chuck Grassley (R) of Iowa told Reuters on Tuesday. ?Ms. Pierson has a lot of work ahead of her to create a culture that respects the important job the agency is tasked with. I hope she succeeds in restoring lost credibility in the Secret Service.?

Barbara Riggs, a mentor to Pierson and the agency?s first female deputy director, said that the scandal was not representative of the level of professionalism at the Secret Service and that Pierson will play a role in restoring its public image.

?She has a challenge in front of her because unfortunately in the public eye that?s what?s branding the Secret Service,? Riggs told The New York Times. ?She has a challenge to move the agency beyond that.?

Pierson joined the Secret Service in 1983, working in the Miami and Orlando, Fla., field offices. She served as special agent in charge of the office of protective services from 2000 to 2001. She was on presidential protective detail on 9/11 in charge of making sure former President Clinton and President George W. Bush were accounted for, not knowing if there would be more attacks. From 2006 to 2008, she was the assistant director of Human Resources and Training, during which she oversaw the agency?s technology upgrade.

She became the chief of staff in 2008, the same year she received the Presidential Meritorious Award for superior performance in management throughout her career.

In an interview with Smithsonian Magazine in 2007, Pierson said she knew she wanted a career in law enforcement, starting with the Orlando Police Department while still in college. The Secret Service gave her the chance be an investigator and also travel, but it also has its challenges.

?We're a small agency with a large mission. Our size gives us the ability to have more personal knowledge of each other as employees,? she said in the interview. ?Some people call it a cult, other people call it a family, but I do think it's unique.?

HUNTSVILLE, TX (3/26/13) -- Gangs are not using the Internet to recruit new members or commit complex cybercrimes, according to a new study funded by Google Ideas.

"What they are doing online is typically what they are doing on the street," said David Pyrooz, an assistant professor at Sam Houston State University, College of Criminal Justice and coauthor of the study. "For the most part, gang members are using the Internet for self-promotion and braggadocio, but that also involves some forms of criminal and deviant behaviors. "

"Criminal and Routine Activities in Online Settings: Gangs, Offenders, and the Internet," coauthored by Scott Decker, director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and doctoral student Richard Moule of Arizona State University, was recently published online by Justice Quarterly. It investigates the use of the Internet and social networking sites by gang members and other young adults for online crime and deviance.

The study was based on interviews the authors conducted with 585 young adults from five cities, including Cleveland, OH; Fresno, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Phoenix, AZ; and St. Louis, MO. It was funded by Google Ideas, a think/do tank that explores the role that technology can play in tackling human challenges, such as violent extremism, illicit networks and fragile states.

The study found that much of the online activities of gang members are typical of their age group; they spend time on the Internet, use social networking sites like Facebook and watch YouTube videos. Much like what studies find in offline or street settings, their rate of committing crimes or deviant acts online is 70% greater than those not in gangs. Gang members illegally download media, sell drugs, coordinate assaults, search social network sites to steal and rob, and upload deviant videos at a higher rate than former or non-gang members, the study found.

However, gang members are not engaging in intricate cybercrimes, such as phishing schemes, identity theft or hacking into commercial enterprises.

"We observe that neither gang members nor their peers have the technological competency to engage in complex forms of cybercrime," the study found. "In short, while the Internet has reached inner city populations, access alone is not translating into sophisticated technological know-how."

Gangs do not use the Internet for purposes instrumental to the group, such as recruiting new members, drug distribution, meetings or other organizational activities. Gang members recognized that law enforcement monitored their online behaviors, so they limited their discussion of gang activities on the Internet or social media sites. Only 20 percent of gang members surveyed said that their gang had a web site or social media page, and one-third of those were password protected.

Gang members recognized the importance of the Internet, but sites were used mainly as status symbols. Instead of exploiting the Internet for criminal opportunities, YouTube, Facebook, or other social media is used much like an "electronic graffiti wall," according the study.

One-quarter of gang member said they used the Internet to search out information on other gangs and more than half watch gang-related videos online, such as fights or videos.

"Many respondents were simply interested in gang related fights and threats in general, finding them as entertaining as a boxing or UFC match," Pyrooz said, referring to gang-related videos on YouTube .

Law enforcement should continue to monitor and address gangs and crime online by working closely with different web sites and ISPs, as well as investigating other forms of telecommunication like cell phone and emails. In addition, they can request service providers remove images that glorify gangs or violence, or use Twitter for citizens to report crime in the community.

"Technology is part of the problem, but it is just as likely part of the solution." said Pyrooz, with regard to documenting the "digital trail" left behind, as well as prosocial opportunities.

(AP) ? One of Britain's youngest Internet entrepreneurs has hit the jackpot after selling his top-selling mobile application Summly to search giant Yahoo.

Seventeen-year-old Nick d'Aloisio, who dreamed up the idea for the content-shortening program when he was studying for his exams, said he was surprised by the deal. As with its other recent acquisitions, Yahoo didn't disclose how much it is paying for Summly, although British newspapers suggested the deal's value at several million dollars.

"I would have never imagined being in this position so suddenly," he wrote on his website, before thanking his family, his school ? and his venture capitalist backer Li Ka-Shing ? for supporting him.

Summly works by condensing content so readers can scroll through more information more quickly ? useful for the small screens of smartphones.

The deal announced Monday is Yahoo's fifth small acquisition in the past five months. All of them have been part of CEO Marissa Mayer's effort to attract more engineers with expertise in building services for smartphones and tablet computers, an increasingly important area of technology that she believes the Internet company had been neglecting.

Although the Yahoo acquisition won't close until later this spring, D'Aloisio said the Summly will no longer be available. Summly's technology will return in other Yahoo products, he said.

D'Aloisio will work for Yahoo in its London office ? in part so that he can complete his high school exams. Two other Summly workers will join Yahoo at its Sunnyvale, California, headquarters.

D'Aloisio is younger than Yahoo, which was incorporated in March 1995.
